The following CHS graduate students have received scholarships this fall.
Aaron Matthews – Recipient of Sandels Fund for Excellence Scholarship
Aaron is an incoming Exercise Physiology PhD student, originally from Ajax, Canada. Prior to coming to FSU, Aaron worked as a Teaching/Graduate Assistant at California State University in Los Angeles. He has received several Honors and Awards throughout his academic career, including the Dean’s List from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa..
Adria Butler – Recipient of the Lane Fund for Excellence in Human Science Scholarship and Emma and Costa Kittles Scholarship
Adria is an incoming Exercise Physiology M.S. student, originally from Memphis, Tennessee. Prior to coming to FSU, Adria worked as a Nutrition Assistant at the University of Memphis. She has received several Honors and Awards throughout her academic career, including the Outstanding Dietetics Student and the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
Alexis “Lexi” Fraino – Recipient of the Dr. Helen Clark Brittin Endowed Scholarship
Lexi is an incoming Exercise Physiology M.S. student, originally from Kenner, Louisiana. Prior to coming to FSU, Lexi worked at Pennington Biomedical Research Center preparing meals for studies alongside fellow research dietitians and research associates. She has received several honors and awards throughout her academic career, including the Dean’s List and the President’s Honor Roll from Louisiana State University.
Allie Blestel – Recipient of the Dr. Emily Haymes Graduate Student Scholarship Endowment and Hallie Deaton Choate Scholarship
Allie is an incoming Sports Nutrition M.S. student, originally from Slidell, Louisiana. Prior to coming to FSU, Allie worked at Regymen Fitness assisting the CEO with the day-to-day running of the facility. She has received several honors and awards throughout her academic career, including Taylor Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS) Honors Award and the Dean’s List from Louisiana State University.
Aly Savage – Recipient of the Margaret Kassouny NFES Scholarship Fund
Aly is an incoming Nutrition & Food Science M.S. student, originally from Orlando, Florida. Prior to coming to FSU, Aly volunteered her time to Kearney Center, helping prepare and serve food to the community. She has received several honors and awards throughout her academic career, including the Dean’s List from the University of North Florida.
Alexander Vanfleet – Recipient of FSU Exercise Science Physicians’, College of Medicine Scholarship
Alexander is a returning College of Medicine PhD student. He received his B.S. in Exercise Science from FSU’s College of Human Science in 2016 and was admitted into FSU Medicine Doctorate program Summer 2017. Through his hard work and dedication to his education he was awarded the Florida State University College of Medicine Summer Research Fellowship in 2018. This award allowed Alexander to work alongside Dr. Judy Delp for ten weeks in the summer of 2018 where he worked on a project that focused on an animal study of the role of Nrf2 in vascular adaptations to exercise training. Alexander’s future career plans including pursuing a career in Emergency Medicine.
Amelia Welch – Recipient of the Norejane J. Hendrickson Scholarship Fund
Amelia is a returning Marriage & Family Therapy PhD student, originally from Arlington, Virginia. Prior to coming to FSU in 2019, Amelia worked at The Family Institute at Northwestern University as a therapist-in-training, conducting over 600 hours of therapy during that time. She has received several honors and awards throughout her academic career, including Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma Honor Societies from Indiana University.
Bailey Veitenheimer – Recipient of the Anne Marie Erdman Endowed Scholarship and the Elsie Thomas Miller Scholarship Fund
Bailey is an incoming Sports Nutrition M.S. student, originally from Bozeman, Montana. Prior to coming to FSU, Bailey worked at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital, assisting with evaluating meals for patients’ dietary requirements. She has received several honors and awards throughout her academic career, including the President’s List from Montana State University.
Cate Herrmans – Recipient of the Endowment for Excellence Fellowships & Scholarships Fund
Cate is a returning Exercise Physiology & Sports Nutrition M.S. student, originally from River Vale, New Jersey. Prior to coming to FSU in 2019, Cate graduated from Johnson & Wales University, majoring in Culinary Nutrition. Along with pursuing her graduate degree, Cate also volunteers at FSU Fueling Station, assisting student athletes with their nutrition.
Chester Sokolowski – Recipient of the Margaret Kassouny NFES Scholarship Fund
Chester is a returning Exercise Physiology PhD student, originally from Atlanta, Georgia. Prior to coming to FSU in 2019, Chester volunteered his time as the Vice President to the Exercise in Medicine Club at the University of Georgia in Atlanta. He has received several honors and awards throughout his academic career, including the Dean’s List and Presidential Scholar from the University of Georgia.
Chrystal McDowell – Recipient of the Emory and Dorothy Johnson Endowed Scholarship
Chrystal is an incoming Marriage & Family Therapy PhD student, originally from Macon, Georgia. Prior to coming to FSU, Chrystal worked at ChanceLight: Autism Services where she helped develop and lead Family Wellness Support Groups for families with children that were diagnosed with ASD. She has also received several honors and awards throughout her academic career, including the AAMFT Conference Presenter in 2019.
Dania Tawfiq – Recipient of the Carolyn Xandrina Hudnall Scholarship-Loan Fund
Dania is an incoming Marriage & Family Therapy PhD student, originally from Tallahassee, Florida. Prior to pursuing her doctoral degree, Dania has volunteered her time to 211 Big Bend as a Hotline Counselor for the local community. She has received several honors and awards throughout her academic career, including the President’s List from Florida State University.
David Barney – Recipient of the Dr. Ava D. Rodgers Endowed Scholarship
David is a returning Nutrition & Food Science PhD student, originally from Lynchburg, Virginia. Along with pursuing his doctoral degree, David has volunteered his time to assist the men’s distance runners for FSU Cross Country/Track & Field community. He has received several honors and awards throughout his academic career, including the President’s Award for Sportsmanship, Citizenship, & Leadership – William & Mary Cross Country.
Deziah Bermudez – Recipient of the May Watson Connor Graduate Scholarship in Child Development
Deziah is an incoming Human Development & Family Science PhD student, originally from Brentwood, New York. Prior to pursuing her doctoral degree, Deziah worked for Cold Spring Hills Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, conducting physically/cognitively stimulating activities for adults with physical disabilities, mental disabilities, and psychological disorders. She has received several honors and awards throughout her academic career, including the Omicron Alpha Zeta Honor Society.
Emmanuel Manhiri – Recipient of the Betty N. Griffith Scholarship
Emmanuel is an incoming Human Development & Family Science PhD student, originally from London, England. Prior to pursuing his doctoral degree, Emmanuel has volunteered his time to food drives, park clean ups, and relay for life through Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity. He has also received honors and awards throughout his academic career, including the Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society.
Grant Laskin – Recipient of the Endowment for Excellence Fellowships & Scholarships Fund
Grant is an incoming Exercise Physiology PhD student, originally from Glenview, Illinois and New Haven, Connecticut. Prior to coming to FSU, Grant worked as a Graduate Research and Teaching Assistant at Southern Connecticut State University. He has also received honors and awards throughout his academic career, including the Dean’s List.
Gautam Joshi – Recipient of the Endowment for Excellence – Sandels Fund for Excellence II
Gautam is an incoming Nutrition & Food Science PhD student, originally from Nepal. Prior to coming to FSU, Grant worked as a Graduate Research Assistant at Tuskegee University. He has also received several honors and awards throughout his academic career, including a Full Scholarship and Research Assistantship for his Master’s in Food and Nutritional Sciences at Tuskegee University.
Hailey Lacy – Recipient of the Anne Marie Erdman Endowed Scholarship and Wayne King Endowed Scholarship
Hailey is an incoming Sports Nutrition M.S. student, originally from Jeffersonville, Indiana. Prior to coming to FSU, Hailey volunteered her time preparing and serving meals to the homeless through Jesus Cares at Exit 0 in Louisville, Kentucky. She has also received several honors and awards throughout his academic career, including the Dean’s List from Eastern Kentucky University.
Jonathan Jones – Recipient of the Genevieve W. Thomas Scholarship
Jonathan is an incoming Sports Science M.S. student, originally from Tallahassee, Florida. Prior to coming to FSU, Jonathan worked at Tallahassee Community College with a focus on care and prevention of athletic injuries. He has also taken a leadership role as the founding member of Black Male Achievers at Tallahassee Community College, which empowered and educate minority men on the importance of the successful completion of their post-secondary aspirations.
Jordan Marshall – Recipient of the Norejane J. Hendrickson Scholarship Fund
Jordan is an incoming Human Development and Family Science PhD student, originally from Elm Creek, Nebraska. Prior to pursuing her doctoral degree, Jordan worked at The ABLE Center providing mental health counseling in individual, family, and group settings for children and adolescents. She has also received several honors and awards throughout her academic career, including First Place Great Lakes Psychology Conference Student Poster Presentation Competition.
Karina Jalapa – Recipient of the James Walters Graduate Fellowship
Karina is an incoming Human Development and Family Science PhD student, originally from Fort Worth, Texas. Prior to pursuing her doctoral degree, Karina worked as a Research Assistant at Texas A&M University. She has also received other honors and awards throughout her academic career, including the Dean’s List.
Katherine Morris – Recipient of the May Watson Connor Graduate Scholarship in Child Development
Katherine is an incoming Marriage and Family Therapy PhD student, originally from Cleveland, Tennessee. Prior to pursuing her doctoral degree, Katherine worked as an Administrative Assistant at Lee University. She has also received several honors and awards throughout her academic career, including the Highest Honors, Summa Cum Laude.
Lexie Unhjem – Recipient of the Norejane J. Hendrickson Scholarship Fund
Lexie is an incoming Marriage and Family Therapy PhD student, originally from Crosby, North Dakota. Prior to pursuing her doctoral degree, Lexie worked at Purdue University Northwest as a Graduate Assistant and Course Instructor. She has received several honors and awards throughout her academic career, including the Dean’s List.
Lillie Renteria – Recipient of the Endowment for Excellence Fellowships & Scholarships Fund
Lillie is an incoming Exercise Physiology PhD student, originally from Thrall, Texas. Prior to pursuing her doctoral degree, Lillie volunteered her time to Physical Therapy & Rehab Concepts (PTRC), working with patients in a physical therapy clinic to boost morale and assist with treatment. She has also received other honors and awards throughout her academic career, including Alpha Chi National Honor Society.
Madeline Bryant – Recipient of the Cora B. & Ross Evans Scholarship Fund
Madeline is an incoming Human Development and Family Science PhD student, originally from Jacksonville, Florida. Prior to pursuing her doctoral degree, Madeline volunteered as the Child Care Center at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. She has received several honors and awards throughout her academic career, including the Dean’s List and Mortar Board Senior Honor Society.
Matthew “Jake” Martenson – Recipient of the College of Human Sciences Preeminence Endowment
Jake is a returning Exercise Physiology PhD student, originally from Athens, Georgia. Prior to coming to FSU in 2019, Jake worked as an Exercise Physiologist at Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel.
Matthew “Matt” Poland – Recipient of the Dr. Helen Cate Memorial Scholarship Fund
Matt is a returning Sports Nutrition M.S. student, originally from Frederick, Maryland. Along with pursuing his degree, Matt also works at FSU Campus Recreation as the Outdoor Pursuits Trip Leader. He has received several honors and awards throughout his academic career, including the Dean’s List.
Nakita Carroll – Recipient of the James Walters Graduate Fellowship
Nakita is an incoming Marriage and Family Therapy PhD student, originally from Hampton, Florida. Prior to pursuing her doctoral degree, Nakita worked at UCF, overseeing and supervising bachelor level case managers in a Social Services grant. She has received other honors and awards throughout her academic career, including the Dean’s List.
Patrick Burns – Recipient of the Endowment for Excellence Fellowships & Scholarships Fund
Patrick is an incoming Sports Nutrition M.S. student, originally from Union City, Pennsylvania. Prior to coming to FSU, Patrick volunteered his time to Weld Food Bank, preparing and packing food for individuals in the community. He has received other honors and awards throughout his academic career, including Magna Cum Laude.
Qianyue “Betty” Sun – Recipient of the Su Wei So Scholarship
Betty is an incoming Sports Nutrition M.S. student, originally from Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China. Prior to coming to FSU, Betty was a Nutrition intern at Texas Athletics – Texas Performance Nutrition. She has also taken a leadership role as Class Gift Committee Member for the University of Texas, Austin.
Qinglan “Lenka” Feng – Recipient of the Betty N. Griffith Scholarship
Lenka is an incoming Human Development and Family Science PhD student, originally from Beijing, China. Prior to pursuing her doctoral degree, Lenka worked at the PAD at Ohio State University as well as an Office Assistant at Harrison Apartments in Ohio. She has received other honors and awards throughout her academic career, including the Dean’s List.
Rachel Sachs – Recipient of the Florence Smith McAllister Endowed Fellowship Fund
Rachel is an incoming Sports Nutrition M.S. student, originally from Long Grove, Illinois. Prior to coming to FSU, Rachel has volunteered her time to collect donations and participate in yearly fundraising events for Prevent Child Abuse America. She has also received several honors and awards throughout her academic career, including the Dean’s List.
Shari Meltzer – Recipient of the Anne Marie Erdman Endowed Scholarship
Shari is a returning Sports Sciences M.S. student, originally from Port Washington, New York. Along with pursuing her degree, Shari has volunteered her time to FSU’s Performance Nutrition Department, making meals and snacks for the student athletes. She has also received several other honors and awards throughout her academic career, including the Dean’s List.
Soo Jin Han – Recipient of the Cora B. & Ross Evans Scholarship Fund
Soo Jin is an incoming Marriage and Family Therapy PhD student, originally from Seoul, South Korea. Prior to pursuing her doctoral degree, Soo Jin was a Marriage and Family Therapist and Intern at Korean-American Mental Health Institute. She is passionate about helping families repair their relationships and provide quality evidence-based systems to help them through the process.
Sung Min “Pearl” Park – Recipient of the Betty N. Griffith Scholarship
Pearl is an incoming Marriage and Family Therapy PhD student, originally from Busan, South Korea. Prior to pursuing her doctoral degree, Pearl worked for Ed Frickson as a Community-Based Therapist. She has received other honors and awards throughout her academic career, including the Dean’s List.
Valentina Iturriaga – Recipient of the Robert E. Lee Scholarship Endowment
Valentina is an incoming Marriage and Family Therapy PhD student, originally from Miami, Florida. Prior to pursuing her doctoral degree, Valentina worked as a Researcher for FSU Resilience and Protective Factor Initiative. She has received other honors and awards throughout her academic career, including the Dean’s List.
Veronica Mekhail – Recipient of the College of Human Sciences Preeminence Endowment
Veronica is an incoming Exercise Physiology M.S. student, originally from Houston, Texas. Prior to coming to FSU, Veronica worked as a Researcher at Texas State University Human and Health Performance. She has also received several honors and awards throughout her academic career, including the Dean’s List and Tau Sigma Honor Society.
