Research Studies & Participant Portal
The faculty and students at the FSU College of Health and Human Sciences frequently search for research participants interested in helping with unique, original studies. All of these research projects are approved by the FSU Institutional Review Board in compliance with federal and state laws.
Below, you can find a list of current research studies seeking participants, along with contact information and participant requirements (if applicable).
Study on Exercise and Fat Metabolism
Qualified candidates should
- Be a woman between the ages of 50 and 70
- Have excess body weight and are at risk for diabetes
- Not exercise regularly
Participants may receive:
- Health screening
- Supervised exercise
- Up to $1,000 upon study completion
The Evaluation of the Compassion for Couples Training
Qualified candidates are
- At least 18 years old
- In a committed romantic relationship for at least six months
Participants will complete a six-week, online training and three surveys: an initial survey, a post-training survey, and a follow-up survey 8 weeks after the end of training. Each survey takes about 20-30 minutes to complete.
Couples who complete all three surveys will receive the training for a fee of $150 per person (normally $800 per couple) provided by licensed marriage and family therapist and program developer, Michelle Becker.
Intercultural Relationship Research
Qualified candidates should
- Be at least 21 years old
- Be in a committed intercultural romantic relationship (i.e., with a partner of a different nationality, race, ethnicity, or religiosity, etc.) for at least six months
Participants will take one survey, which will take roughly 30-40 minutes to complete. Participants who finish the survey will be entered into a lottery to win a $25 Amazon gift card.
Heart Failure Research Study
Qualified candidates should either
- Have heart failure
- Provide care for someone with heart failure
This study will enroll “care teams” which include the individual with heart failure and their family care partner. Participants will participate in a 13-week telephone-based research study and will work with a licensed advanced practice nurse. Participants will receive telephone calls either weekly or monthly and one (1) telehealth visit (via telephone or virtual) scheduled at participants’ convenience.
Upon completion of this study, each care team will be offered up to $200 in gift cards.
The effects of fresh mango consumption
This study looks at the effects of eating fresh mangoes in indices of glycemic control, cardiovascular health, and body composition in overweight and obese individuals with prediabetes
Qualified candidates should be
- 50-70 years old
- Male or post-menopausal females
- Currently eating <5 mangoes per week
Participants will participate in a 24-week study consisting of five (5) total visits to the FSU lab.
Participants will receive $100 in compensation upon completion of study and all provided supplemental material.
The Effect of Almonds on Functional Performance, Vascular Health, and Sleep in Active Older Adults
- Men and women between the ages 50 and 64
- Participate in physical activity for 30+ min at least 3 times a week
- Do not consume more than 2 servings of almonds a week
Participants will be asked to consume almonds for 12 weeks, and granola bars for a separate 12 weeks. Participants will be asked to come to FSU campus at the beginning and end of each 12-week snacking period for testing (4 total testing visits). Participants will be provided with all snacks, in addition to $200 for completing the study.
