Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training
The athletic training degree prepares students for graduate study in athletic training, physical therapy, physician assistant and medicine. It’s ideal for students interested in gaining clinical experience with injury prevention, recognition and immediate care, rehabilitation, health care management and professional development in a sports medicine environment.
The program is spread out over six semesters. It involves a combination of challenging didactic courses and hands-on clinical experience.
Students have opportunities to complete clinical rotations in a variety of settings and work with diverse patient populations. Clinical experience is gained on and off campus and includes the FSU athletic department, local high schools, and medical clinics.
Certification
Students entering the athletic training program after Fall ’16 are required to complete a graduate professional athletic training program in order to become eligible for Board of Certification.
The Florida State University Athletic Training Program was accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). (6850 Austin Center Blvd., Suite 100, Austin, TX 78731-3101) The program voluntarily withdrew its CAATE accreditation effective August 1, 2019.
This degree is a limited access program that prepares students for professional programs in athletic training, physical therapy, physician assistant or medicine.
A “limited access” major requires students to complete a separate application process for possible admission into the program. Formal acceptance into the major occurs only in the Spring semester after taking ATR 1800-Introduction to Athletic Training (Enrollment in ATR 1800 is a required first step. There are course pre and co-requisites for ATR 1800. Please see the curriculum sheet for more details.).
Transfer students are strongly encouraged to enroll in ATR 1800-Introduction to Athletic Training (Enrollment in ATR 1800 is a required first step. There are course pre and co-requisites for ATR 1800. Please see the curriculum sheet for more details.) and apply for the spring semester only, as major courses are restricted to formally accepted students.
All of the following also count toward major requirements. Some may also be used to meet general education requirements.
